How music is used in films

How is music used in films?

Music can be used in films to create the tone of a scene, maybe a funny tone, for example, reminiscing by Little River Band. Or maybe you want to create a sinister or even detached irony.

In the movie American Psycho, Patrick Bateman lures Paul Allan back to his apartment with one thing in mind; to murder him. However, instead of using a sinister or ominous tone, the director plays Hip to be square by Hue Lewis and the news. The upbeat song creates cognitive dissonance.

How does music connect to the characters?

A song may relate to a character, a location, or a situation. For example, in Thor Ragnarok Led zeppelins ''the immigrant song'' is played at the beginning of the movie, during movie Thor is made to question his self-worth, and not until the end of the film which he regains confidence and wisdom ad becomes the true god of thunder that the song is replayed.
