Types of edits
Today we looked at different types of edits in films and why they are used for different things.
Cutting in action- cutting from one shot to another while the subject is still in matter. It doesn't have to be on anything drastic like a punch or a kick, it could even be a character moving or a character going through a door.
Cutaway- cutting to an insert shot of something and then back. Cutaways may also be used to get inside the head of a character
Cross cut- This is where the editor intercuts back and forth between locations, for example phone calls are often cross-cut. This type of edit can be used for suspense and to show what's going on inside a character's head.
Jumpcut- the editor cuts between the same shot and is often deliberately used to show the passing of time.
Match cut- cuts to another shot by either matching the action, or the composition. These are often mixed up with jump cuts, they are used as scene transitions.
Fade in/fade out- These are simple and are when the scene dissolved to or from black.
Smash cut- these are abrupt transitions. An obvious example is someone waking up from a dream or a nightmare. It is going from something quiet to intense or intense to quiet.
Wipe- This one is simply the screen wipes away; this can be in many different forms.
L-cut
-The audio carries over into the next shot
-Makes the scene more fluid
J-cut
-Audio from the next scene starts before you get to it
- Hear before you see it
- Revealing a new element within a scene
